Should someone with Osteoporosis have a chiropractic procedure?
My husband’s grandmother has Scoliosis Of The Spine , which she heard can be taken care of by a chiropractor with some kind of decompression of the spine. But, she also has Osteoporosis, and heard from someone else that any kind of chiropractic procedure is terrible for people with Osteoporosis. Is this true?
Ooops…sorry, its Stenosis of the spine! Does that make a difference?
People having osteoporosis and osteopenia receive chiropractic care every day. Personally I have performed thousands of chiropractic adjustments on these patients and never caused injury. The clinical approach for these patients differs in regard to method of correction. Many of my osteoporosis patients are adjusted using an instrument that delivers a quick, low force thrust which is painless.
The conditions where chiropractic care is contraindicated include fracture, dislocation, tumor, or infection of a vertebra. From a biomechanical standpoint, the posterior elements of the vertebrae are the least susceptible to collapse or fracture from osteoporosis. This part of the spine is area of contact for making the correction. The vertebral body and ribs are much more susceptible to fracture and the ribs being the most susceptible to injury from a manual chiropractic adjustment. Therefore instrument assisted adjusting is a very safe and comfortable approach for helping these patients.
