I nearly died as an infant from an unknown illness, I would like help identifiying it, can you help me?
20 months after I was born, I was stricken with a mysterious, life-threatening illness that damaged my nervous system. I lost my sense of balance and orientation, falling down over and over, walking into door frames and even walls. I lost all my vocabulary in the course of a week. When my parents realized that something was seriously wrong I had a CT scan locally that showed nothing. The next day I was taken to the special pediatrics clinic at UCSF Medical Center, which started a 14-month investigation into what might be wrong. I had CT scans, MRIs, and nuclear medicine scans again and again. My dad has told me that they were looking for a neuroblastoma, a cancer in my spine or brain. When they did not find one, they stood by thinking that I had something that was rare and fatal. After three months I was still alive, so, fortunately, it was not the latter of the hypotheses.
It may have been a viral encephalitis. My professor says that the patients generally recover well; “with few sequelae” as the medicos say. These days, diagnostic methods are better; we can test for the RNA or DNA of many viruses, in cerebrospinal fluid (or other samples), and determine what the infectious agent is.
You might never know for sure what the cause was. If you had your full medical records, you would do better to read all of their test results. They should say which diagnoses were “excluded” (ruled out) and why. That would be better than asking here, with such sketchy info.
