Shoulder Pain Relief – Tips And Suggestions To Relieve Shoulder Joint Pain
The majority of people will experience shoulder joint pain at some point in their lives. There are many ways to achieve shoulder pain relief. This article will discuss the common methods of relieving painful symptoms of the shoulder.
The goal of treating painful symptoms of the shoulder is to eliminate those symptoms and allow the patient to return to a normal level of work and recreational activities. How successful you are at achieving this is dependent on many factors. These include but are not limited to the extent of your injury, your medical history, previous shoulder injuries, your commitment to getting better, an accurate diagnosis, previous shoulder surgeries, your occupation and your level of activities.
Here are some of the more common shoulder pain relief methods that are used today:
1. Light rest which means you can move your shoulder but should avoid lifing heavy items, overhead activities or repetitive activities that increase your pain.
2. Modalities such as heat and ice can be comforting and offer some temporary relief of your shoulder joint pain.
3. Gentle stretching to the affected muscles and tendons.
4. Anti-inflammatory medication
5. Injection of cortisone
6. Activity modification
If you have experienced shoulder joint pain you will want to consult your physician if you are unable to lift your arm overhead or lift items, notice any deformity of the joint that wasn’t there before, shoulder pain that is not improving after a week or so, swelling or bruising in the absence of injury, signs of infection (fever, redness, warm to touch).
Treatment to achieve shoulder pain relief will come in the form of activity modification, rest, and therapeutic exercises to improve your strength and range of motion. Anti-inflammatory medication may be prescribed as well. In more stubborn cases your physician may recommend an injection. Surgery is sometimes required but in the majority of cases the shoulder joint pain can be relieved with conservative measures.
Shoulder pain relief can be achieved through several of the methods described in this article. Often times a combination of methods is used. In the majority of cases a well rounded therapeutic exercise program is needed to reduce pain in the shoulder and to prevent reoccurrence of the symptoms.
