Do you Know if Your Sciatic Nerve Treatment is Working?
Ahhh, the quest for sciatica relief. Pretty fun right? If you are like most people, it usually goes like this:
- you are in pain
- you go to the doctor (well, this is usually after waiting a few days or a week just to get into the doctor’s office)
- you are given a prescription of some sort, told to take it easy, and sent on your merry way.
- Either your pain comes back or it never fully went away. So you repeat steps 1 through 3
And so it goes. This fun little game between you and your doctor. The only thing that really changes is what you will do to fix the pain.
Along with the pills, you will probably be told to do some specific exercises. Eventually along with the pills and exercises, you will probably be told to see a chiropractor or something of that sort.
And while all of this is going on, you get the pleasure of still being in pain.
Despite your doctor telling you that this next treatment ‘should work’ or that you need to just ‘hang in there a little while longer’. You start to wonder, How Do I Know if My Sciatic Pain Treatment is Not Working?
So how do you know? How do you know when it is time to move on to another treatment, or possibly another doctor?
1 – If you are in More Pain than you Started With – the main goal with finding sciatica relief is to be out of pain. It does not matter if you are doing exercises at home or if you are in a chiropractors office. Nothing you do should cause you more pain. So if you are in more pain after your chiropractic session, you may want to look elsewhere for relief.
2 – Weeks Without Relief – anything that you try should start to take effect within a couple of weeks. After a few weeks, if you are finding your pain getting less frequent or less intense, stick with it. However, if your pain is still just as strong as it was when you started. It is time to move on.
And above all, always follow the two ‘golden rules’ of sciatic nerve relief:
1 – Avoid Surgery and Injections Unless You are Positive You have Done Everything Else – this one should be easy. No one wants to jump on the surgery or injection wagon. But the longer you are in pain, the better these things appear. There is a time when you should consider this, just be sure that it is not until you have done everything else that you possibly could.
2 – Be Proactive in Your own Health – no one cares about your pain more than you. There are so many causes of sciatica and even more treatments for it. But only you know what is working for you. Trust your instincts, journal everything, and remember that your doctor should be working for you.
