The drug is injected into the epidural space that surrounds the spinal column. However, this type of treatment may offer only temporary relief but does not address the root of the problem. For severe or very severe sciatica symptoms, narcotics or mild opiate-based painkillers and muscle relaxants may be indicated.
Hot or cold compression packs help to reduce pain. Also, bed rest may provide some temporary relief of pain. However, prolonged bed rest will actually make your sciatica symptoms worse. It is therefore important for you to remain as physically active as possible. Walking and gentle stretching exercises are recommended.
Surgery is perhaps the last option for sciatica nerve pain treatment. Surgery is done when the symptoms are getting progressively worse, mainly because it speeds up the resolution of pain. In cases of herniated discs, for example, a surgical procedure called a laminectomy may be performed. In this procedure, a portion of the posterior arch is removed to relieve pressure on the affected nerve tissues. In cases of spinal stenosis, the portion of bone that is putting pressure on the sciatic nerve system can be removed.
Because sciatica is a symptom of a problem, such as something that compresses or irritates the nerve roots comprising the sciatic nerve, sciatic nerve pain treatment must address these two factors in order for it to effectively relieve pain.
