ruptured disc and all nerves pinched in that area!?
my dad has a disc that ruptured in a strange way and his doctors say that they have never seen anything like it. it’s pinching all of his nerves in that area and he has been in excruciating pain for over a month. he’s in a wheelchair from it, had to quit his job, hasn’t slept. he got a epidural injection and it did nothing to help. they are not wanting to do surgery because they say it would be very tedious, but they haven’t told him what he should do and don’t seem to care anymore. any suggestions? anything we could say to the doctors? any questions we should ask them? we are desperate and out of ideas for him. have you or anyone you know gone through this hell? where do we go from here? he can’t live like this. or rather, i can’t stand to see him like this anymore! i wish i could take the pain away from him. no pain pills have touched his pain. lorcet, percocet, nothing helps!!!
Has he tried physical therapy or spinal traction? The PT will help strengthen the muscles surrounding the spine and allow them to hold the vertebrae up to relieve the compression. Spinal traction could also be of use since when the spine is in traction, the compression on the discs and nerve roots is relieved. As far as the doctor, start looking for a new neurosurgeon. If it is possible to fix his back through a spinal fusion, a neurosurgeon will know this. Be advised that sometimes an injury is so bad that surgical intervention is more likely to be harmful than helpful. If that is the case he will need to start seeing a pain management doctor to help him get his pain under control. If the neurosurgeon believes that a fusion would be beneficial, then this is the route I would take to help relieve the pain. All surgeries have risks, and when it comes to the spine, the risks can sometimes outweigh the benefits. They will not do surgery if there is a big chance that his spinal cord could be compromised and he could end up with partial or complete paralyzation. Best advice is to first see a new doctor. After that, see about getting a referral to PT and getting a traction machine to use at home.
