Prostate Cancer and Prevention

I recently attended a meeting of doctors, surgeons, researchers and interested individuals to the Pacific Prostate Cancer Conference. Representatives of the Oregon Health Sciences University spoke of his department of the prostate-state of the art research cancer. Any man who reads this article can benefit from advances in prevention, detection and treatment of this disease.

Begin with a brief overview of our anatomy. The prostate gland is located near the bottom of the bladder of a man and placed behind the pubic bone and in front of the rectum. main function of the prostate is to produce most of the fluids in semen. tiny ducts in the prostate to convey this fluid the urethra, the channel that drains urine from the bladder. This fluid is released through the penis during ejaculation.

Prostate cancer is cancer more common in American men. It is estimated that at the age of 50 years, 1 in 4 men have some cancerous cells in the prostate gland. 80 years of age, the proportion rises to 1 in 2. Therefore, your risk of prostate cancer increases with age. The average age of diagnosis is 72.

Prostate cancer is also the second leading cause of cancer death in American men. However, unlike other cancers, is likely to die from prostate cancer than those who will die from it. On average, an American has about a 30 percent risk of getting prostate cancer in his life, but only 3 percent risk of dying from the disease.

The risk of prostate cancer is much higher among blacks, intermediate among whites, and lowest among native Japanese. However, this increased risk may be due to factors other than those related to race. Studies have shown a link between testosterone levels and prostate cancer risk, with the black man who has the highest levels.

Symptoms of prostate cancer include frequent urination, inability to urinate, blood in urine or semen, or painful ejaculation. Frequent back pain, burning during urination or a weak flow of urine also are very common.

There is another prostate condition known as benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH. This is basically an enlarged prostate without cancerous lesions. The symptoms of this disease are similar in many respects with prostate cancer. For example, prostate specific antigen or PSA may be high in both BPH and prostate cancer.

Chemotherapy, radiation and surgery are the three most common methods of treatment prostate cancer. The choice of method used depends largely on the extent of the disease. With the removal of the prostate surgery, there is an increased risk of osteoporosis similar to menopause in women. This problem is most often by use of hormone replacement therapy after the operation. Calcium and vitamin D supplements have also proved useful in reducing this type of bone loss.

physical measures to prevent Prostate cancer chemoprevention include changes in diet and lifestyle, and hormonal prevention. Chemoprevention is the use of certain drugs natural or man, vitamins, or other agents to reverse, suppress or prevent cancer growth. Several agents, including difluoromethylornithine (DFMO), isoflavonoids, selenium, vitamins D and E, lycopene, and have shown potential benefits according to studies. More tests are needed to confirm this.

The herb saw palmetto American, was once thought to be the best natural supplement for prostate cancer prevention. Recent studies lead researchers to believe that the palm Saw palmetto to be much less potent in its preventive effect.

A diet high in fat, especially animal fat, may be associated with increased cancer risk prostate. Therefore, the reduction of red meat, cheese and other dairy products, salad dressings, sauces and is a good step. The increased intake of fruits and vegetables has been associated with reduced prostate cancer risk in some studies. Adding soy products like tofu and soy milk can be useful in regulating hormonal balance. Exercise, even just walking to dry, it has been shown to reduce the incidence of prostate cancer and virtually all other types cancer.

Because prostate cancer has a link to the levels of testosterone, are conducting studies to uncover the role of certain drugs, as finasteride, that reduce the amount of male hormone as preventive agents for prostate cancer.

If you think you have experienced any of the symptoms listed in this article, consult your health care provider. Early detection of prostate cancer is very important in managing of its harmful effects.
