Pain in the rear (butt), treatment?

For the past few weeks, I’ve had what feels like a pulled muscle in my butt (right side), deep inside near the top, seems like a smaller muscle, but the pain is centered around a particular point. I’ve done my research, the pain is sciatica like, but the biggest problem I’m having is the pain is causing is me to limp around. I can sit in a chair fine.

I’ve found an exercise/stretch that directly targets the hurt muscle. I can feel the pain when I am lying directly on my back, legs together, and lift my right leg (keeping it straight), into the air. I can feel the injured muscle/pain in the first 45 degrees of that lift. I’ve tried adding resistance to that exercise, and I can tell the exercise it’s directly affecting the muscle.

My question, should I continue with that exercise, if I can feel pain? Or, is that exercise exactly what I should be doing? Obviously I’d like to heal the muscle and move on with life.

Yes, you should continue to exercise gently through the pain. You will probably find that the pain decreases as you use the muscle more. The leg lifts are good – they’re actually what my doctor has recommended to me when I have back pain. You can also try taking low doses of Ibuprofin regularly – like one tablet every six hours as it’s an anti-inflammatory and will help with the pain and the healing.

Taking warm baths should help as would going to your gym’s jacuzzi/hot tub. You could also go to a licensed massage therapist for a massage – the masseuse can help loosen the muscles up in your back and can also target the area that really hurts. If you do get a massage, drink plenty of water before and afterwards.

If the pain worsens or continues much longer then you should schedule an appointment with your physician. The doctor can give you muscle relaxers and send you to physical therapy if necessary. The doctor can also help determine what’s really wrong with you. Hope you’re better soon.
