I have questions about labor?
I’m 28 weeks pregnant so I’ve been thinking more and more about labor. This is my first so sorry if any of these questions sound stupid. If anyone can answer even ONE of these questions I’d be happy. I’m going to ask my doctor next week but I’d like to know other opinions.
(1) I heard epidural gives some people permanent back pains. Is that true? Are there other alternatives? I want some form of pain relief but not one that is going to interfere much with the labor as much as I heard epidural does.
(2) If you try to go natural but then all of a sudden you need an emergency c-section, will you get an epidural or any form of pain medication or do they just go straight for the kill?
(3) I had HORRIBLE and I mean HORRIBLE menstrual cramps when I was younger. I even ended up in ER several times. Does this mean labor could be really painful for me?

1) There are risks to every medical procedure including epidurals. I’m sure that it may cause some to have permanent backpain, but a vast majority of women can’t handle the pain of natural child birth. With this being your first child, you don’t know if the epidural will/will not affect you. There are risks in every decision you make and you have to decide if the risks outweigh the good it can do for you. I can tell you once you are in a lot of unbearable pain you can change your mind!!! I went into having my little girl with being openminded and said I would try natural if I could and I opted for an epidural. I had extremely bad back labor that it didn’t completely control. Nothing is guaranteed to work or not work hun.
2) If you go natural and need an emergency c-section they will give you a spinal block or knock you out with a general anesthetic. You won’t have any pain. A doctor would not ever cut you open like that without pain managment. If the doctor thinks you are at risk for a c-section they will keep you informed as things progress. If you start having complications they will let you know!!
3) Anything is possible with labor. This is your first child and no one can tell you what your body will do or how it will react. That is the scariest thing in labor and delivery…anything can happen… and every pregnancy is different.
Just stay calm and everything will work out. Your baby will need you to focus and help him/her out of there the best you can. Just try to make the best decision on what works for you!!! Good luck!!!
