Ten Unconventional Migraine Treatments
The following are ten of the more intriguing non-traditional migraine treatments available today, some tried and true and some a little more “out there”:
Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese therapy that involves inserting very fine needles into blocked “energy points” on the body to restore the natural flow of “chi”, or life energy. Studies indicate that acupuncture may stimulate the brain to release pain-reducing endorphins and other chemicals.
Aromatherapy involves the use of essential oils, which can be inhaled or massaged into the skin. Lavender, ginger, peppermint and marjoram oils are recommended for migraine.
Biofeedback is a technique where electrodes are attached to the skin to give the patient feedback on muscle tension, skin temperature and brain waves to help him or her learn to control these functions, and to increase blood flow to the brain.
Botox started being used to treat migraines after patients reported a decrease in headaches following cosmetic facial treatments. It’s believed Botox blocks the pain by deadening the injection area.
Chiropractic adjustments are said to ease headaches caused by subluxation (a partial dislocation of bones) in the neck. The misalignment of the bones can irritate nerves leading out from the spine, causing migraines.
Gut Brain Therapy is based on the belief that dysfunction in the digestive and elimination systems results in the body being unable to create the proper balance of necessary neurotransmitters and hormones, causing a “malnourished” protein metabolism that results in headache. The therapy involves treatment with patented migraine formula supplements.
Herbs have long been recommended to combat migraine, in particular butterbur, feverfew and cannabis.

Remember that these are largely unproven therapies, and not a reason to abandon traditional medical care. Be sure to consult your doctor before trying any alternative migraine treatment. Be aware that herbs and natural remedies can interfere with some prescription migraine medication. Your doctor will want to work with you to adjust the dosage of your migraine prescription medication should you achieve relief from an unconventional treatment method.
