Degenerative disc disease is a condition where the walls of the disc deteriorate. As the walls deteriorate it causes changes in the way the vertebrae are aligned. There are a number of things that can happen when the disc degenerates. There can be irritation of the nerves, bulging of the fluid material in the disc, drying of the fluid material in the disc, and degenerative changes of the vertebrae. There is no real cure for the problem. Surgical intervention may or may not be helpful but for surgery to be done there has to be one of two main reasons. The first is loss of motor strength in the legs, bladder, or bowel. The second is intractable pain, that means pain for which there is no control. Surgery is not an advisable way for once it is done there is not a good way to correct any problems that arise from it. The best treatment for it is a loss of weight, increasing muscular strength, and improved flexibility. The best way to achieve that is through a course of physical therapy. They will teach you how to maintain proper posture, increase strength, improve muscular balance, increase flexibility, and give you a home program to follow out these things. Bed rest is not a cure but will only make things worse. Yoga or Pilate’s is also a good exercise program that can be followed for life.
