why does diabetes cause frequent urination?

One of the symptoms for diabetes is frequent urination. Why? Why does diabetes cause a person to urinate frequently?
And what is considered frequently? If you drink a 17 fl oz bottle of water over a three hour span and eat food too, at the end of the three hours you urinated once every 20 minutes for 2 hours, is that considered excessive?
And each time you went you had a full bladder. Is it the water? Or the diabetes?
No Cammie, I’m not thirsty and drinking too much!

In diabetics, the sugar in the blood increases the blood’s osmolality. This tends to pull fluid out of tissues and into the bloodstream (through osmosis). Your kidneys get an increased fluid load delivered to them and make more urine because of it.

What you describe is more frequent than normal.

Edit: A diabetic person is thirsty because they pee too much…NOT the other way around (i.e. they do not pee because they are thirsty and drink too much).
