Dog Incontinence When Sleeping Is A Common Problem For Pet Owners
Dog incontinence when sleeping is a major problem for many dog owners. Many pets sleep on the bed at night and like to stay close to their masters but when dog incontinence when sleeping strikes it can make that once heartwarming experience into a nightmare of odor and dry cleaning bills. It is a difficult situation for even the most loving pet owner. Some will quarantine their pets, in older pets euthanasia is a common decision, some pet owners will employ protective bed sheets, and others will try to find solutions to alleviate the problem of dog incontinence when sleeping.
Incontinence happens when a dog no longer has the ability to control urination. This is most common in older dogs over the age of 8 with both male and female pets being vulnerable. It is generally a leaking rather than a full blown loss of bladder control. This constant dribbling or leaking may lead to skin irritation around the genitals. Perhaps, you may have noticed your dog liking this area more frequently than normal.
I have a feeling that if you are reading this article behavioral incontinence is not a possibility, and we not be focusing on that condition.
There are number of possible causes of dog incontinence when sleeping. Some of the most common culprits are old age, partial blockage of the urethra, bladder infections, brain or spinal cord diseases, and hormone responsive incontinence. There are a few others as well but the point is a trip to the vet may be needed to unravel the mystery, and put your pet on the road to recovery.
For others seeking professional help many not be a realistic option and they will be left to unravel the mystery themselves, ultimately coming up with a home remedy to reverse the condition.
For my pets the most common cause of the involuntary passing of urine has been either urinary tract infection or loss of muscle strength in the areas that control urine flow. Both are often found in older pets. Let me pass on a few suggestion that could help you formulate a home remedy plan to return both you and your pets lives back to normal.
*Don’t put excess strain on the bladder and urethra: This can be done by making sure they are allowed to void every few hours.
*Keep them active: Studies show that inactive pets tend to have weaker immune systems, are more prone to have urinary tract stones, and have a high incidence of incontinence.
*Watch for dehydration: Incontinent pets tend to dehydrate so make sure they have plenty of clean water to drink. Additionally, adding either cranberry or blueberry juice will protect against bacterial infection.
* Keep the raw area around the genitals clean and trimmed: Bathing your pet and applying an over the counter canine antibacterial cream to the genital area may be necessary, at least for a while.
*Reduce stress: Many pets are very emotional and should be treated with love and kindness during these challenging times. Keeping their lives as stress free as possible will help avoid depression and reduce the risk of compromising the immune system.
*Homeopathy can help: Homeopathic remedies containing berberis, cantharis, and staphysagris have shown to be very effective in cases where urinary leakage and/or dribbling are concerned.
In conclusion, there are answers both from a veterinarian and home remedy perspective. With creative and diligent care, dog incontinence when sleeping can be put to rest, allowing you and your pet to live happy comfortable lives for many years to come.
