What is the best non-surgical treatment for a herniated and degenerative disc?

Physical therapy and accupuncture seem to help some and I don’t want surgery and am trying to avoid a cortisone shot. Any suggestions for more “organic” treatments? Thanks

The only thing that really worked for me was the shot the above poster is speaking of. It’s an epidural steroid injection. I am sorry to not give a better answer. It was an out-patient procedure – i had it done in November of 2004 and have had no problems since. It’s been wonderful. I have a herniation at L4/L5 and L5/S1 and was in tremendous pain. I had had one of the shots years ago when i first hurt my back and it didn’t help, but this one – i’m not sure if the stars were aligned just right or what, but it’s been 2 years and knock on wood! :)

The shot itself was painless – they light you up with lidacaine first and then will inject a pain killer also. There is a little pinch and then pressure and they have to inject it slowly – like over a few minutes – and then it’s over – i think it took maybe 20 minutes total.

I had tried just about everything – chiropractor, adjustments, herbal wraps, therapy …

Good luck to you – i do know how painful it is.
