My husband suffers from chronic lower back pain, what can he do to help w/the pain?

He hurt his back a few years ago but didnt have medical insurance at the time. He was able to get basic medical stuff done (as in x-rays, and pain pills thats about it). The x-rays shown he had slipped 2 lower disc and when he did so some nerves got caught inbetween them.

He just a year ago has been able to get to specialist who WONT give him pain meds and STILL are pushing him back and fourth to different doctors because noone wants to do back surgery on him (the orginal doctor wanted to cut a nerve?).

Anyway, Tonight he is in HORRIBLE pain. We have a 7 months olf who weighs 18 pounds he has been taking care of him today due to me having the flu.

Is there anything anyone can suggest he can do here at home to help with the pain?

Thanks so much in advance!

I belong to a support group for people who have had back injuries. Please keep in mind that I am not a Doctor.

Many Specialists will not give pain killers for reasons that are too complicated to go into here. Patients normally find it difficult to get long term pain killers from Specialists because they don’t know the patient’s total medical condition and for legal reasons.

In this situation there is no reason why your husband should not be prescribed. Your husband should ask his General Practioner — he knows your husband’s total medical condition and will be more willing to prescribe pain control.

If your GP won’t prescribe them because of the laws in the State you live in, then your husband should be asked to sent to a pain clinic or pain specialist. This is set up because of the law, so don’t be discouraged if your GP won’t, it may be because of the laws in your State.

A decision NOT to have an operation is always a valid decision by any patient. Back operations sometimes do more harm than good.

Besides taking pain control medication, your husband should also ask for a reference for a physiotherapist. Your husband should do NO exercises for his back unless he has consulted a physiotherapist first.

If your husband goes to a pain clinic, they will have a pain control physician who will prescribe pain killers and give him physiotherapy at the same time. If there is no pain clinic in your area and the odds are there isn’t, then your husband needs to specifically ask for pain control (it’s part of the law again) and get a reference to a physiotherapist.

Tonight the best thing to do is to take whatever off the shelf pain killer he can get and put cold packs on the pain (hot packs are good for muscle relaxation, but when treating yourself for injury or pain try cold packs and never hot packs. I learned about why cold packs and never hot packs unless a Physician has seen the injury first at a St Johns Ambulance course.

Before I get hate mail about cold packs, the questioner indicated a specific medical condition where there is some injury.
