What would cause chronic back pain and paralysis below the knees? Scans reveal nothing …?
My wife has slipped a disc L5 in the past. Sensation to the legs has always returned within days, it has now been over 4 weeks and she has been dischaged from hospital as scans say there is nothing they can see to be causing the pain, spasms and paralysis. My wife is suicidal from the pain and I am at my wits end. Please help…

Sorry to hear about your wife’s back pain and paralysis. Did she have a fall or trauma? Can she feel anything below the knees or are her legs completely without feeling and strength? Did the doctors mention anything about spondylothesis? Did the doctors do any EMG studies? Try putting a heating pad on the glut of the side that is hurting or both gluts if it is on both sides. Then try a stretch for her gluts. Have her sit up and cross one leg over the other where the crossed over leg’s ankle is resting on the thigh of the other leg. Have her gently lean forward and keep her chest up so she does not slouch. She should feel a gentle stretch in her gluts. See if that releases the glut muscle and helps with sensation. Another thing to try is to lie her on her back, bend the right knee while you lift the left leg straight up for a hamstring stretch. Once she feels a little stretch, gently move her foot towards her head and away. That is a nerve stretch for the sciatic nerve, see if that helps release the nerve from any entrapment it might be in and if any sensations returns. Good luck.
