what should I expect at a pain clinic?
I have an appt. tommorrow for a pain clinic. I have a back injury and have suffered chronic back pain for over 2 years, this will be my first time going to a pain clinic and I just wanted to know what to expect, and will I be able to get my pain medicines from them or do they not usually prescribe pain meds??
During most first visits to a Pain Clinic, your pain management doctor will interview you about your condition, review your films, and ask you what has helped before (both medications, and exercises). As well as what motions/movements/activities make the pain worse.
It is my experience, that unless you already have a running RX for a pain med (and sometimes, even if you do – it’s still up to the PMD’s discretion) – the PMD will not write an RX for any strong opiate pain medications on the first visit. They will instead, begin you first on a regiment of NSAIDS – with possible epidural steroid injections. And then go from there.
