Could a back brace work for adult scoliosis?
I’m nineteen and was diagnosed with scoliosis. As far as I can see, my hips are pretty even and so are my shoulders. However, I keep getting back aches which I’m told is from scoliosis. Are there back braces which would ease the pain and prevent further curving of the spine?
Bracing is designed to stabilize and prevent further curving of the spine. You may be more interested in lumbar/back support.
In most cases, scoliosis is not painful. Additionally, there are other causes of back pain, which your doctor will want to look for as well.
But you can try pain medicines (I take 1 Alleve at bedtime to help with morning stiffness), alternating between heat and cold applications (cold works best for me), massage, and gentle stretching. Long periods of inactivity in bed are not helpful and may worsen the pain.
Be sure you are seeing a spine specialist, either neurosurgeon or an orthopedic surgeon. I don’t trust chiropractors. I had my back manipulated once or twice, it always hurt worse after they were done with it. As a nurse, I’ve also cared for a few patients who required surgery after seeing a chiropractor because the chiropractor actually caused nerve damage.
